PARTⅠ- THE PATH OF SELF-CULTIVATION Without Selfishness, No Fear

Whether we amount to anything or not depends upon whether we are wholeheartedly devoted or not

Everyone dies. Without exception. Before dying we want to accomplish something. We wish to leave behind a mark of our existence on the earth, to leave behind something worthwhile—everyone feels this. This is as it should be.
The world does not at all conform itself to our desires and expectations. Wretched, meaningless, exasperating—such is what we all find the world to be.

We must become simpletons in order to accomplish our true work.
Man is disappointingly small-minded: in even the most trivial matters he is inclined to show off his own importance, and he worries himself solely with myriad useless things.
We must endeavor to be broad-spirited enough to ignore what those around us say, acting with confidence and independence.

To think poorly of others merely reveals our own degradation.

Without selfishness, there is no fear.
Without fear, there is limitless freedom.
