Indigenous America

Shinto, from which Oomoto springs, is the indigenous religion of Japan. Its roots are animist, and there is no definitive bible or even a founding prophet. Shinto grew in pre-history from the land and people of Japan.

Oomoto strives therefore to establish friendly relations not only with the big international religions such as Christianity and Islam, but also with followers of indigenous religions.

In America, Oomoto has been fortunate to get to know Dennis Banks, and Philip Lane Sr. and Jr., prominent leaders of American Indian culture.

Philip Lane Jr.

Dennis Banks is an Ojibwa Indian, a member of the Sun Dance Religion, and founder of the American Indian Movement. He vis-ited Oomoto in September 1989.

Philip Lane Sr. and Jr. are members of the Standing Rock Lakota tribe from South Dakota. Phil Lane Jr. performed an Indian ceremony for the joint worship of Indigenous Religions held at Iwashimizu Shrine in April 1993.

“I do have a history, I do have a culture, there is a Spirit and I do have to find that.”
